Underground culture must eke out its living in the harshest of manners here. Those few who recklessly choose to forego the system's protection form small, hidden collectives that can barely survive, let alone forge links with other such groups. They cannot form movements, let alone significantly oppose the state-sanctioned authorities. Their numbers are continually diminished by defection into the state and private apparatuses meant to turn creative, potentially dissident energies towards the proper education of youth. Others of these idealists, tired and frustrated at every turn, come to choose to devote their energies to the adornment of the homes of the system's elites.
